About the House
You have probably heard Ebenezer in the context of a Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. But the name sake for this house of worship was first inspired by a family holiday in Wales, when we stayed opposite an old chapel that had been part of the Welsh revival. Ebenezer Chapel in Newborough, Wales ‘hosted’ an outbreak of this revival in 1905, where a small group of young men met fervently to pray and seek God, Who subsequently met with them in powerful encounters of His presence.
‘Ebenezer’ is a Hebrew word, meaning ‘Stone of Help’, and is found in 1 Sam 7:12. Samuel names a monolithic stone ‘Ebenezer’ to honour and commemorate the great victory God had wrought on behalf of His people. Israel had been walking in disobedience to God and His purpose, and had been routed by their enemies. This victory of God came as His people repented of their disobedience and recognised Him as their ONLY Lord.
It physically represented the spiritual testimony of God in the midst of His people, which is exactly our desire for this house of worship. Each of us, as we are saved by the grace of God and adopted in to His family, become a living testimony of His goodness and victory in our lives. Ebenezer House has been established to give voice to this testimony through an unceasing, unified cry of praise and worship.
We want to make it clear that we are not a church. Our desire and commitment is to support the work and ministry of the church, believing that worship and encounter with God pioneers the way for a host of breakthroughs in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Jesus loves His church and laid down His life to rescue her and glorify her alongside Himself.
Our firm belief is that ‘we ain’t seen nothing yet!’, that our experience of God and the weight of His presence has been nothing in comparison to His desire to invade our lives with Himself. Come and join us as we press on and press in to more of Him!
